| Rick Wooddell, a Vietnam Veteran and a regular member of our post, as well as a member of the ALR of Post 21 was invited to join R2R (Ride 2 Recovery) and help escort and be a road guard for the Disabled Veterans on their bike cycle ride on September 13th to September 18, 2011 and again in October 22 through October 30, 2011 in Florida. Rick was invited to go on both of these rides for the Road to Recovery by the R2R Program Organizers. The R2R is a non profit organization designed to assist in the healing process of wounded veterans that are struggling mentally, physically and emotionally. These rides are fitness challenges and are not meant to be a race, but, rather to enhance veterans with a "can do" spirit and taking these wounded Veterans beyond the feelings of loss and depression many of them suffer from, to feelings of strength and endurance. Rick has logged over 2000 miles on these rides that have taken him through the winding roads in Pennsylvania and through Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia and then riding to Jacksonville, and onto Daytona, Cape Canaveral, Orlando, and Tampa, Florida. It is very difficult riding a scooter over these long distances while also taking care of and watching out for those on hand cycles, recumbent cycles and other bicycles adapted for amputees of legs, hands and arms. Rick has stated that it has been one of the most rewarding things he has ever done, since his own return from Vietnam. Anyone who knows, Rick, knows he is a person who can be counted on to not only do a great job, but often goes over and above the call of duty, especially when it will help other Veterans. Being an escort is a very demanding job! Not only does one have to ride their scooters at very low speeds, but they have to be fully aware of all the current and local traffic, and help to keep the cyclists in formation. The escorts have to constantly remain vigilant for any potential hazards that can occur at any moment. It is a real tribute to one of our own, Mr. Rick Wooddell, who has made a genuine and great impact on these disabled veteran riders and the Organizers. He has been invited to be an escort on future rides coming up in March 2012. A wonderful round of applause from everyone at Post 21 to Rick, for a job "Well Done. And a big THANK YOU for representing Post 21 and the ALR in a professional manner to bring pride to the ALR as well as to Post 21 |
